A chronic autoimmune disorder Rheumatoid Arthritis affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterised by joint inflammation, pain, stiffness, and swelling, which can severely impact daily life. While modern medicine offers treatments to manage symptoms, Ayurveda, the ancient and traditional Indian holistic healing system, provides unique natural insights and perspectives.

According to Ayurveda, Rheumatoid Arthritis is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the body’s doshas, particularly the aggravation of Vata and the accumulation of toxins (Ama). Ayurvedic treatments aim to restore balance by addressing the root cause and reducing symptoms.

A potent combination of Herbal remedies, specialized diets, and lifestyle modifications, play integral roles in the Ayurvedic management of Rheumatoid arthritis.

In this internal struggle, the immune system launches an attack on the joints, causing a surge of symptoms.

Rheumatoid Arthritis presents itself through several common signs, such as persistent joint pain, tenderness, and swelling. However, one particularly distinctive symptom is morning stiffness, which can be a significant hurdle in initiating the day with comfort and ease.

As the disease progresses, joints may become red, warm to the touch, and even lose their normal range of motion. This can make everyday tasks like gripping objects or climbing stairs a daunting challenge.

STAGES OF Rheumatoid arthritis

Based on the causes and symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis, RA is branched into four stages.

STAGE I:  EARLY OR AMA VATA STAGE

The initial stage of Rheumatoid arthritis is Ama Vata, where the aggravated Vata dosha combines with the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the joints. This stage is characterized by occasional joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. In the early stage of Rheumatoid arthritis, there will be no signs or vague symptoms of RA, which can come or go, also there is no scope of diagnosis as the symptoms are not visible, however, there are a few joints or linings which can get inflamed during the early stage.

Ayurvedic treatment for Rheumatoid arthritis focuses on eliminating Ama and pacifying Vata to prevent further progression.

STAGE 2:  SWELLING OR VATA RAKTA STAGE

The second stage is known as Vata Rakta, the aggravated Vata dosha spreads to the blood, affecting circulation and increasing pain, swelling, and joint redness.

Due to damage in the joints, there is a loss of mobility in the joints. The second stage causes inflammation, affecting the eyes, skin, and even the heart or circulatory system.

Ayurvedic interventions aim to balance Vata and purify the blood to mitigate symptoms and reduce inflammation.

STAGE 3:- EVIDENT SYMPTOMS OR SANDHI SHOTHA

As Rheumatoid arthritis progresses, it enters the Sandhi Shotha stage, where symptoms become severe, the damage extends to the bone, joints start getting deformed and inflammation becomes more pronounced.

Severe pain, swelling, and extreme loss of mobility are common symptoms.

STAGE 4:- LOCKED/STIFF JOINTS OR ANKYLOSIS

In the advanced stage of Rheumatoid arthritis, called Ankylosis, a significant loss of joint function and deformities may occur.

The predominant features are joint stiffness, extreme pain, swelling, immobility, and severe pain. The strength of the muscles tends to reduce, and joints and bones become stiff due to stiffness.
